“Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will try to enter but will not be able”

In this Sunday’s Gospel (Lk 13,22-30) Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem and someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” His answer for them, as for ourselves, if we dare to make the same question, was: “Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able”. Many?! Won’t be able?! Really?! Yes, really, and we can know that is real because the one who is saying this is truthful: Jesus. And we can be thinking, ‘this is not for me, I go to Mass, I do pretty well, I am a good person, He is talking with somebody else’, well, if we keep reading ...

Pope’s Homily for solemn mass in Assisi

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday is celebrating an outdoor solemn mass in the St. Francis Square of the central Italian town of Assisi where he says he is a pilgrim “like countless other pilgrims” who has come to give thanks for the gift of St. Francis to the Church. Today, October 4th,is the Saint’s feast day. As the Pope recalled in his homily in this morning’s liturgy, his namesake and Patron of Italy was the son of a wealthy merchant of Assisi whose “encounter with Jesus led him to strip himself of an easy and carefree life in order to espouse ‘Lady Poverty’ and to live as a true son of our heavenly Father.” Below we publish the Pope’s ...

Pope in Assisi: Christians must strip themselves of worldliness

(Vatican Radio) Christians and the Church must strip themselves of worldliness, said Pope Francis while addressing some of the poor in the Italian hill town of Assisi early Friday. The Pope offered this message in the same hall in which St. Francis, about 800 years ago, undressed himself and laid his fine clothes at his wealthy father’s feet, renouncing his riches and inheritance in favour of a life of poverty consecrated to God. The Pope once again put aside his prepared speech and began his impromptu remarks by debunking a notion that had circulated in the press in recent days: that he would imitate St. Francis by divesting the bishops, the cardinals and himself, as well. However, he said, today ...

St Therese. “Little Flower”

Therese Martin was the last of nine children born to Louis and Zelie Martin on January 2, 1873, in Alencon, France. However, only five of these children lived to reach adulthood. Precocious and sensitive, Therese needed much attention. Her mother died when she was 4 years old. As a result, her father and sisters babied young Therese. She had a spirit that wanted everything. At the age of 14, on Christmas Eve in 1886, Therese had a conversion that transformed her life. From then on, her powerful energy and sensitive spirit were turned toward love, instead of keeping herself happy. At 15, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux to give her whole life to God. She took the religious ...

Missionary Weekend in London

“For the Church, for the young people, for mankind…”   Last 28th and 29th of September, Shalom Catholic Community in London, England, was engaged in another Missionary Weekend. The missionaries were able to walk throughout the streets of Hackney borough, east London, knocking on doors in the vicinity of St. Monica’s Catholic Church. At every door, they were able to offer a word of peace, blessing and to invite people to have a deeper experience with God at their local Parish or participating in a prayer group for young people.   Inspired by a higher love that once reached and changed their lives, the missionaries went out ready to accept whatever would come behind each door. “We are called to ...

Fasting is an exercise

There are three things, my brethren, by which faith stands firm, devotion remains constant, and virtue endures. They are prayer, fasting and mercy. Prayer knocks at the door, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other. (Saint Peter Chrysologus) The penitential days and times in the universal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent. (Code of Canon Law 1250) What is Fast? “Properly speaking fasting consists in abstaining from food, but speaking metaphorically it denotes abstinence from anything harmful, and such especially is sin.” (IIa IIae, Q147, a.2 ad.1) Why do we Fast? According to Saint Thomas Aquinas for three reasons: “ First, in order ...
