Shalom Youth Congress is an event that has a formative character; it is organized by Shalom Catholic Community, whose target audience are the young people who are from 12 to 32 years old. Every year, a different city hosts a SYC (Shalom Youth Congress), bringing the youth from the whole Brazil and from other countries together. This year, with the theme “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God!” (Mt 5:8), the event will be organized out of Brazil for the first time. The places where this event will take place are: Salvador, Brazil; Paraguay (Latin American SYC); France (European SYC).
Its first edition was in the city of Fortaleza (CE), the place where Shalom Community was founded, on September 23 and 24, 1989. In 2014, over 9 thousand young people, from various nations, responded to the invitation of Shalom Catholic Community’s founder, Moysés Azevedo, and gathered in Fortaleza to celebrate the 25 years of the “Youth for Jesus Project”. SYC, in 2014, was the first international congress organized by Shalom. Not only the youth of Shalom Community participated in the event, but also other young people from other movements and dioceses came to have an experience which they compared with a “mini WYD”, due to the spirit of faith, unity and partying.
Shalom Youth Congress has the aim of leading the youth to grow in the experience with God, through what is directed to be done by the Church, which has frequently invited the youth to become new disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ, being authentic testimonies of hope and true joy. SYC disposes a different schedule, marked by moments of prayer, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Eucharistic celebrations, shows, arts and moments of congregation and interaction among the youth.
An important fact that is necessary to highlight is that from 2007 the themes of SYC started to be based on the topics which the Pope defines to World Youth Day for each year. This relation was well done. Shalom Community started to harvest great fruits related to the unity with the Holy Father’s thought and with what the Church expresses.
