By the grace of God, the Shalom Catholic Community evangelizes people ‘near and far’ with the opening of four new missions on 4 different continents in 2019. These are the new foundations bringing the charism of Peace to the ends of the earth.
Get to know some of the cities where the Shalom Community will announce the Risen Christ.
Lyon, France
Located 470 km from Paris, the capital of France, Lyon is a culturally important city. In 1998, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Lyon a World Heritage Site. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is located in this city as are several convents and the headquarters of the French bishops.
The Festival of Lights is part of the city’s events calendar. The feast dates back to 1643 and pays tribute to the intercession of the Virgin Mary to spare the city from the Black Plague which was spreading throughout France. It takes place in December and attracts thousands of visitors.
New York, USA
New York, the most populous city in the United States, will gain three new residents: Missionaries from Shalom Catholic Community will soon arrive there to carry out evangelistic work announcing the Risen Christ.
The city has many world-famous squares, parks and religious sites: Times Square and Central Park, St. Peter and Holy Trinity Catholic Churches as well as the Cathedral of St. Patrick who is the Patron Saint of the archdiocese of New York. The city has for decades received large numbers of immigrants from various parts of the world. In many respects, New York remains the cultural center of the United States and has many major tourist attractions including the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and Fifth Avenue.
Melbourne, Australia
A city with more than 4 million inhabitants, Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria, Australia. It is a very important urban area for the country, after Sydney which is 878 km away. The founding of the Community’s Melbourne mission is its first on this continent.
Melbourne is regarded as the cultural capital of Australia, with its highly regarded centers of visual arts, dance and literature. Through artistic expressions, missionaries can announce the Risen Christ to Australians and visitors to the city.
Sucre, Bolivia
Sucre, the constitutional capital of Bolivia and the place where the country gained its independence from Spanish rule in 1825, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. At an altitude of than 2,800 meters, the city is known for being calm and having houses and buildings painted in light colors.
The Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the architectural beauties of this Bolivian city. In the Mirador (tower) of the Convent of San Felipe Neri, built between 1795-1799, it is possible to have a beautiful view of the entire region.
