The last activity of the course was given on December 10th  at the Space of Peace of Chaves by the agronomist engineer and Master in Horticulture, Benedito Pereira. In three days, the class learned new techniques to grow a greater diversity of vegetables.

In the closing class, the participants were able to put their knowledge into practice by performing the vegetable grafting method (union of different species).

Benedito affirms that the course stimulated the development of opportunities for the family economy, allowing extra income and greater food supplies for the families of the island of Marajó through agriculture.

“I noticed their proactivity, at the beginning, what seemed like a “hobby” later became a source of income, thus awakening concrete ideas of working and having a better quality of life. With the money they raise, they already invest in the house, in beauty care and in commerce,” he says.

The aim of the mini-course was to promote family farming and boost the local economy.

One of the students of the mini-course was Sandra Brito, a 43-year-old woman: “It was a new experience for me. I was already planting before the mini-course, now I have more and new skills to work with my garden,” she said. Thanks to her garden, Sandra earns part of her income. She currently plants green onions, chives, cabbage, peppers, among others. In addition to being a means of livelihood, growing vegetables is a therapy in Sandra’s life.

Sustainability

Recognized as a service of coexistence and promoter of new relationships of friendship and care, the Peace Space assists about 36 children and teenagers in the municipality of Chaves. In addition to developing educational, spiritual and human formation workshops, the institution provides food from Monday to Friday to these young and children.

Due to the lack of accessibility of vegetables in the region, which are mostly transported by river from Macapá (AM), and due to the lack of nutrients necessary for the children, the Space has a garden, from where vegetables such as parsley, chicory, chives and cilantro are harvested.
