Over 5,000 young people arrived in São Paulo, Brazil on June 1st for the Shalom Youth Congress (SYC), an event sponsored by Shalom Catholic Community, an international association of faithful recognized by the Vatican.

Since 1989, the SYC has brought together young people from all over the world with the aim of deepening their faith and encouraging the exchange of cultures. This year it was held at the Expo Barra Funda, from 1st to 3rd June, and the program was full of activities. There were profound moments of spirituality, prayer, many talks and workshops, as well as the expected cultural attractions, with theatrical performances and musical shows such as the long-awaited Missionário Shalom.

Each year’s theme is proposed by the Pope for young people and this year it was: “Do not be afraid, Mary, because you have found favor with God“. The speakers included: Moysés Azevedo, founder of Shalom Community and co-founder Emmir Nogueira, and Fr. João Wilkes, who leads the Youth Section of the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

According to the organizers, the Congress was addressed not only to young people who embrace the spirituality of the Community, but to all those who wish to live a new experience in the love of God and the Church. The goal is to promote a personal experience with God and the spiritual growth of young people.

The Congress was a resounding success and everyone is excited about next Shalom Youth Congress.
