The School of Peace is a project of the Shalom Catholic Community whose mission is to educate and form hearts for peace through an integral training process that will offer professional and technical training courses, as well as artistic and sports training for children and young people in situation of social vulnerability. It is a space where through meeting volunteers and people in vulnerable situations a new culture created collectively, with peace as the main foundation.
The inspiration for the School of Peace came from the founder of the community, Moyses Azevedo, when a Shalom mission house was opened in Chaves, a small city which is located on the island of Marajò in the extreme north of Brazil. Before those people forgotten by society and their poverty, he decided to do something to provide a better perspective of life for them.
The project was made and presented by Moyses to Pope Francis as the community response to the extraordinary jubilee of mercy during a private audience. The pope blessed the idea that is currently in the fundraising stage in order to start its execution at the same time in Fortaleza and Chaves, very different municipalities but with great need of support.
