The Shalom Catholic Community was born from a burning desire to proclaim Jesus Christ, especially to young people most distant from the Church. And it was precisely through a snack bar that this mission began.
At first glance, a snack bar might seem like nothing more than a space for meals and casual gatherings. But for God, it became a true instrument of evangelization.
What began as a welcoming environment, where young people could talk, make friends and enjoy moments of relaxation, proved to be a strategy inspired by the Holy Spirit to lead hearts to a personal encounter with Christ.
The beginning of a missionary strategy
From the very start, the proposal was simple and deeply missionary: to create an environment where people felt loved, welcomed and respected. Long before a young person opens their heart to hear a sermon, they seek joy, friendship and the witness of those who serve. Thus, the first proclamation of the Gospel took place through closeness, listening and concrete love.
This vision remains alive to this day. The snack bar was never merely a commercial space. It is a true net cast into the sea, as in the Gospel, where Christ invites the disciples to become fishers of men (cf. Mt 4:19). Each table can become a place of encounter, each conversation an opportunity to sow hope, each smile a witness to the peace that comes from God.
A space that keeps drawing hearts
Over these 44 years, this evangelizing strategy has shown its fruitfulness.
How many friendships began over a cup of coffee? How many young people accepted an invitation to join a prayer group after a snack? How many families found new meaning for their lives because they first discovered an environment where they were truly welcomed?
Today, the snack bars present in the Shalom Evangelization Centers continue to play this very special role. They are the stage for countless initiatives that bring people closer to the experience of God. They often host themed evenings, moments of fellowship, book launches, musical performances, conversation circles, gatherings among friends, and activities aimed at young people, families and newcomers to the Shalom Work.
More than serving food, these spaces serve encounters. They foster dialogue, build bridges and help many people who might not initially enter a church, but who feel at ease getting to know a welcoming, human environment full of life. Evangelization happens naturally, through friendship, listening and the witness of those who live the Shalom Charism.
A fishing net still cast
To celebrate the 44 years of the Shalom Catholic Community, in this July of Peace, is also to remember that God acts through missionary creativity. The snack bar remains a concrete sign that every human reality can be transformed into a place of evangelization when placed at the service of the Kingdom of God.
More than a place of fellowship, it continues to be an open door to the experience of Peace. A net cast daily to reach new hearts. A space where the ordinary becomes extraordinary because God continues to meet his children in the simplest of places.
May this story inspire each of us to also transform our everyday surroundings into opportunities to proclaim Christ. After all, when God’s love is lived with authenticity, even a snack bar can change destinies and lead many souls to a true encounter with Peace.
