During the Youth Jubilee, the San Lorenzo neighborhood will welcome the celebration of “Giorgio Frassati Encounter,” an initiative by the Shalom Community offering Jubilee pilgrims in Rome a musical, artistic, and sports program at Piazza dell’Immacolata with free admission.
The event began this morning, July 29, at Piazza dell’Immacolata, with an international ping-pong and billiards tournament.

Frassati: the young traveler and pilgrim
Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in Turin on April 6, 1901, and died on July 4, 1925. He was a young Italian layman, lover of life and mountains, and deeply in love with Christ. Born into a wealthy and cultured family, he stood out from a young age for his simple but firm faith, contagious joy, and radical commitment to the poor.
An engineering student in Turin, he was an active member of Catholic Action, the Dominican Laity, and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. He often spent long hours serving the sick, elderly, and needy families—always quietly, without seeking applause. His motto was “Verso l’alto!” (“To the heights!”), reflecting both his love of the mountain and his aspiration for holiness.
He died at age 24 from a sudden polio infection, likely contracted while serving the poorest. His death surprised his family: thousands of humble people whom he had helped filled the streets at his funeral.
He was beatified by Saint John Paul II in 1990, who called him “the man of the eight beatitudes.” His life continues to inspire those of us and thousands of young people who desire to live an authentic, joyful, and committed faith.
