The Shalom Catholic Community, represented by the Salvador Mission and the Human Promotion Office, is taking part in the Jubilee of the Poor at the Vatican from November 13 to 17. The event, promoted by the Holy See, gathers pilgrims from around the world for moments of prayer, sharing, and service to the poor, as well as missionaries and authorities who reaffirm their commitment to promoting human dignity and evangelizing those most in need.
The sisters of the Institute founded by Saint Dulce, Sr. Adriana and Sr. Maiara, Organizational Culture and Humanization Advisor of the Irmã Dulce Social Works, were present representing the work born in Bahia that today inspires so many paths. In addition to the image, the space will feature an altar dedicated to Saint Dulce, allowing more people to learn about her life and the daily commitment of the Works that continue her legacy.
Starting this Thursday, the Shalom Community, in partnership with the Shrine of Saint Dulce of the Poor, will take responsibility for caring for this devotion to Saint Dulce on Italian soil. Also present were Ana Paula Matos (@anapaulamatos.ba), Deputy Mayor and Secretary of Culture and Tourism of Salvador, and Júnior Magalhães (@jrmagalhaes_ba), Secretary of Social Promotion, Poverty Relief, Leisure, and Sports of the City of Salvador.
It is beautiful to see a story that began so simply find, in Rome, a place that welcomes it with the same tenderness that has always guided our steps. Thus, the two Romes are united in devotion to Saint Dulce—the Rome of Bahia, where everything began, and the Italian Rome that now embraces her with affection.
For Nara Jessica Lacerda, Local Responsible (LR) of the Salvador Mission, “participating in this historic moment in Rome is to witness the Community—and especially the Salvador Mission—fulfill our call to be a bridge between heaven and those in need on earth. Saint Dulce of the Poor, the ‘Good Angel of Bahia,’ inspires us to bring to the heart of the Church the testimony of a love that becomes service and transforms lives.”
The program begins this Thursday (13), at the São Lourenço Center, in front of Saint Peter’s Square, a reference point for the Shalom Community in Rome. During the opening ceremony, the image of the Saint will be enthroned in a symbolic gesture expressing the desire to spread her devotion in Brazil and around the world.
The moment will be attended by the Deputy Mayor of Salvador, Ana Paula Matos, the Secretary of Poverty Relief, Júnior Magalhães, Sisters Adriana and Maiara of the Irmã Dulce Social Works (OSID), Nara Jessica Lacerda, LR of the Salvador Mission, and Jeovana Freitas, Human Promotion Advisor of the Shalom Catholic Community, as well as missionaries, pilgrims, and representatives of various nations.
At 2:30 p.m., the roundtable “Among Friends of Saint Dulce” will take place, followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at 5 p.m. and Holy Mass at 6:15 p.m., with the enthronement of the image of the first Brazilian saint and “Good Angel of Bahia.”
Shalom at the Jubilee
The Shalom Catholic Community participates in the Jubilee of the Poor through the Shalom for the Poor Project, whose intercessors are Saint Dulce of the Poor and Saint Teresa of Calcutta. The initiative reinforces the Community’s commitment to the promotion of human dignity, the preferential option for the poor, and the integration of faith and life. According to Jeovana Freitas, “participating in this Jubilee is to witness that evangelization and human promotion walk together. Saint Dulce is a living example of love that becomes service and care for those in greatest need.”
