The Shalom Catholic Community mission in Cape Verde is celebrating two years of evangelisation in the African country. By request of the Cape Verdean Cardinal Arlindo Furtado, the current Bishop of the Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde, the Community celebrates with great joy and gratitude its anniversary in the “city of Morabeza”.
The Case Verde Mission
On the 6th of August, the day that the church celebrates in its liturgy the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is also the date in which the Divine Providence chose to establish, in the 2016, the mission in Cape Verde.
Currently, the Shalom mission is based in the City of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, in the borough of Palmarejo. Counting with the help of 7 missionaries from the Life Community. Who now hold two youth prayer groups, two mixed ages prayer groups, an open group which runs on the Night of Praise. The Community also holds Life in the Spirit Seminars, Acamps, Shalom Cup, New Year’s of Peace and many other Family, Youth and Adult activities.
Recently, during the month of July 2018, Cape Verde hosted a missionary expedition with the presence of 21 missionaries.
Gratitude
Throughout this day, the expressions of gratitude by the members are greatly shared through social media. “It was through Shalom that I got to know and had a personal experience with the Love of God. Today I am capable of being in contact with God, and I can attribute this to the prayer group”, expressed Edgar Tavares, a young Cape Verdean.
Diego Rodrigo, who’s responsible for the local mission, also shared his joy, “when I stop to think about these last two years in the mission of Cape Verde, I am reminded of a phrase from the Writings of our Community, where our founder says, ‘what we learn during this time is fundamental for the work that the mercy of God has built within us, lovingly ignoring our weaknesses and inability of carrying it out. Praise be to God Who does all according to His will.’” (Historic WRI II, 64).
“That is the great grace that I experience while being in mission here, the grace of God that comes, leading to ourselves. The grace of God that comes in the aid of our weaknesses and limitations, and in us “the vases of clay” shining in us yet again His glory for these people.”
Therefore, it is impossible to not mention the Cape Verdeans, a welcoming and big hearted nation who turn our mission into a happy place, where all experience the love of God.”, mentioned the responsible member for the local mission.
Words from the Cardinal
“Congratulations to Shalom who celebrate two years of their presence and mission here on Cape Verde. I wish that everything continues to run smoothly and that you are able to testify to and influence others, especially the youth, the families and everyone, with the loving presence of Jesus Christ amongst us,” said the Cardinal as he congratulated the mission.
The celebration will take place at the Community House at 6pm, beginning with the Holy Mass in thanksgiving for the love and mercy of God during this time. The programme also includes much praise, music, fraternity and testimonies.
