The Transformative Power of the Holy Spirit

By Higor Fontoura

At the Fully Alive Retreat, held from November 22nd to 24th, João Lucas delivered a talk that profoundly impacted my heart. From the moment he spoke, I felt drawn into his message about the Holy Spirit’s transformative power. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as João Lucas shared the Promise of the Father, urging us to open ourselves to a deeper, life-changing relationship with the Holy Spirit.

He challenged us from the very beginning, saying, “Rules without relationship equals rebellion.” This simple yet powerful statement struck me deeply. It echoed the sentiment of a previous speaker and reminded me that religious practices without true connection to God can often lead to spiritual stagnation. João Lucas emphasized the importance of seeking more than just external compliance with rules; we must seek an authentic encounter with the divine.

One of the most moving parts of his talk was his recounting of the story of Nicodemus, a Pharisee who sought Jesus secretly, despite the societal pressures and expectations surrounding him. João Lucas used this story to illustrate how a sincere search for truth and a relationship with God can lead to profound transformation. Imagining Nicodemus’ internal struggle resonated with me, making me reflect on my own journey of faith.

João Lucas urged us to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, allowing it to replace our “hearts of stone” with a “heart of flesh.” He spoke of how the Holy Spirit can guide us and lead us into deeper love, mercy, and truth. He shared stories of individuals, like Carlo Acutis, who embodied holiness despite their youth and circumstances. It was a powerful reminder that holiness is accessible to everyone.

He also challenged us to see ourselves as called to a higher purpose. “You are all called to a higher purpose, regardless of your background or circumstances,” he declared. This struck me deeply, especially in a world where so many are driven by material success and societal expectations. True fulfillment, João Lucas reminded us, comes not from outward achievements but from a deep and authentic connection with God.

João Lucas also spoke about the importance of community and prayer in this transformative journey. He encouraged us to seek out prayer groups and fellowship with other believers, acknowledging that the spiritual journey is never meant to be walked alone. The talk concluded with a powerful invitation to pray for the Holy Spirit to come upon us and renew us.

As I left the retreat, I felt a renewed sense of hope and a burning desire to invite the Holy Spirit more fully into my life. The experience left me with a deep longing for transformation, as I began to understand the profound ways in which the Holy Spirit can change our lives, not just in a single moment, but continuously over time.

Growing in Grace: Cultivating a Fruitful Relationship with God

By Higor Fontoura

Kelly’s talk was a perfect continuation of the spiritual experience we had just encountered. As we reflected on the powerful retreat, Kelly reminded us that the real work was just beginning. “Grace is a free and undeserved gift from God,” she said, and her words resonated deeply in my heart. Grace, she explained, is not something we can earn; it is freely given by God to help us respond to His call. This understanding of grace, as a pure gift, was both humbling and empowering. It meant that no matter where we are in our spiritual journey, God is always ready to pour out His love and transformative power on us.

Kelly emphasized that the grace we receive is not for our own benefit alone. “Grace is meant to help us collaborate in the salvation of others and the growth of the Body of Christ.” This shifted my perspective. I realized that the experiences and graces I had just received were not meant to be hoarded or kept to myself, but shared with others. God entrusts us with His grace so that we can bring His love and mercy into the world.

The image Kelly used to describe growing in grace was particularly powerful. She likened it to a grapevine, deeply rooted in heaven and bearing an abundance of fruit. “This is what God desires for each of us,” she said. “To be so grounded in Him that we overflow with the fruits of the Spirit.” The key to this, she explained, is remaining connected to the Vine—nourishing our relationship with Christ through prayer, the sacraments, and community.

Kelly also reminded us that our faith cannot depend solely on our feelings, which can often be fleeting. “My faith does not equal my feelings,” she declared. She encouraged us to cling to the steadfast love of God, even in times when we might not feel His presence. This was a powerful reminder that faith is about trust and commitment, not just emotional highs.

As her talk drew to a close, Kelly challenged us to embrace our new role in the family of believers. “You’re not alone in this,” she said. She encouraged us to connect with local prayer groups and ministries, recognizing that we need each other for support, nourishment, and accountability as we continue to grow in grace.

When the talk ended, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The retreat had been a powerful encounter with the Holy Spirit, but now it was time to put the grace we had received into action. With God’s help and the support of my community, I felt ready to continue this journey of growth in grace and deepen my relationship with Him.
