Carlo Acutis’ canonization was originally set for April 27, Divine Mercy Sunday, as part of the celebrations planned for the Jubilee of Adolescents. However, due to the death of the Holy Father, the Holy See Press Office has announced that both the Eucharistic celebration and the canonization rite for Carlo Acutis are suspended.
Blessed Carlo, who passed away on October 12, 2006, was beatified in Assisi on October 10, 2020. Since 2019, his body has rested in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore – Sanctuary of the Spogliazione, in Assisi.
The Dicastery for Evangelization has announced that the Jubilee of Adolescents will continue as originally planned. The “Via Lucis” prayer service will take place on April 25, followed by the “Dialogues with the City” gatherings in the squares on Saturday, April 26. Pilgrimages to the Holy Door and Holy Mass will also take place — without the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis — in St. Peter’s Square on April 27.
Out of respect for this time of mourning, the musical celebration scheduled for April 26 at 5 p.m. in the Circus Maximus has also been canceled.
The Dicastery for Evangelization further stated that, “in unity with the entire People of God, the Catholic Church, and the whole world, we join together in grief and prayer for the passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis.”
