In the district known as the “heart of Seoul”, Myeongdong, the 2027 World Youth Day (WYD) was officially launched on Sunday 28th.

In addition to the presence of ecclesial authorities such as the Apostolic Nuncio to Seoul, Archbishop Giovanni Gaspari, and the Secretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, Dr. Gleison De Paula Souza, the ceremony also saw the participation of a special group of young people, made up of North Korean defectors, young people with disabilities and soldiers from the Army, Navy and Air Force.

The launch began with a parade of flags with young people from South Korea and other countries, followed by the reading of the Launch Declaration, which officially opened the work of preparing for the Day.

After the ceremony, Holy Mass was presided over by the Archbishop of Seoul, Monsignor Peter Soon-taick Chung, who is also the chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for WYD 2027. During his homily, he expressed his expectations:

“I am confident that this stage will serve as an opportunity and a space of hope for all of you. Together, I want to cultivate this shared hope through WYD. I believe that WYD represents an invaluable opportunity for young people from all over the world, including our Korean youth, to reflect on and engage with these challenging tasks. It is imperative that we unite our hearts, pray together and discern the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we earnestly prepare for this journey.”

Priests from Seoul visited the General Diaconia of the Shalom Community

In July, Fathers Dominique Lee and Moses Kim – both responsible for WYD Seoul – visited the Diaconia with Father Tiago Soares, international advisor to the Shalom Community.

During their stay in Brazil, as well as visiting the headquarters of the General Government of the Shalom Community, they also took part in the Halleluya Festival.

“They came to see how we work with young people, with the big events (such as Halleluya), how our experience of evangelization is, so that we can also be a contribution of the Church to the Day,” commented Father Tiago.
