Pilgrimage is one of the oldest and most profound experiences in the history of faith. Long before the great cathedrals were built or crowds gathered at global shrines, the People of God were already learning, first-hand, that the spiritual life is a dynamic journey.
It is precisely in this spirit of detachment and newness that the Shalom Convention 2026 is born. During the event’s launch livestream, Moysés Azevedo, founder of the Shalom Catholic Community, highlighted this essential character: to set out as the People of God, allowing the Lord to guide every step and speak to the heart along the journey.
The history of salvation written along the way
Sacred Scripture is woven through with pilgrimages. Recalling this journey helps us understand what God wishes to do in the heart of each participant in 2026:
- Abraham: He left his native land without knowing the exact destination, moved solely by trust in the divine promise.
- The people of Israel: They crossed the desert on a long journey towards the Promised Land.
- Jesus Christ: As a devout Jew, he made pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the holy feasts and at Passover.
Pilgrimage has never meant mere physical movement; it is an interior movement. Whoever accepts the challenge of being a pilgrim chooses to leave their comfort, to uproot themselves from their certainties and to open themselves to the transformation that only happens along the way.
From great shrines to the heart of the Church
Over the centuries, this culture has remained alive in the Church, drawing millions of Christians to places marked by the witness of the saints, such as Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, Fátima and Lourdes.
On this map of faith, Rome holds a unique place. As the centre of the unity of the Catholic Church, the Eternal City preserves the living memory of the apostles Peter and Paul, the blood of the martyrs and the first steps of Christianity. At the Shalom Convention 2026, pilgrims will experience intense days of prayer in deeply symbolic places, such as the Basilicas of St John Lateran and St Paul Outside the Walls.
Assisi and the Franciscan Jubilee Year
One of the most eagerly awaited moments of the programme will be the visit to Assisi. The land of St Francis and St Clare continues to attract hearts through its atmosphere that breathes the simplicity of the Gospel, the radicalness of self-giving and the joy of providence.
Especially in this Franciscan Jubilee Year, Assisi takes on an even stronger meaning for the Shalom Vocation. To make a pilgrimage there will be an invitation to disarm the heart, to silence the everyday noise and to embrace interior poverty, letting God bring about a true spiritual renewal in our mission.
