Saint Therese, help me find my vocation

I met Shalom Community in 1998.That is when it was founded in the city where I lived, in Mossoró (A city in the northeast of Brazil). A providential meeting at the right time and in the way God wanted it to be. A few months before this encounter, the shrine of Saint Therese was passing through town and I went with a friend from school to see it. I had had an experience with the Holy Spirit in a weekend retreat, but I left behind what I had been through. I remember it caught my attention when they said that Saint Therese had discovered her vocation at the age of 15 years old because it was my age at the ...

Prayer, Purgatory and All Souls’ Day

When I was a Protestant, there were things I thought I knew about the Catholic Church, things I knew I didn’t know about the Catholic Church, but didn’t want to learn, and then a box marked, “Everything Else”. During my conversion process, that “Everything Else” box grew bigger and bigger as I slowly acquainted myself with this strange new religion that familiarity had convinced me I knew everything about, but pride had kept me ignorant of.  One of the most beautiful, exotic jewels I discovered in that box was All Souls Day. Growing up Presbyterian, everyone went to Heaven.  And they went there immediately upon the death rattle.  It wasn’t that there was an unshakable certainty in each souls’ eternal reward, it was just that ...
