Pope opens the door of hope at the beginning of the Jubilee Year 2025

With the rite of opening the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, the Pope has initiated this time of grace that will last until January 6, 2026.

The Holy Father opened the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica on the evening of December 24 in the presence of 20,000 faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square in Rome to experience this moment of grace.

The Rite of Opening the Holy Door includes the proclamation of a reading from chapter 10 of the Gospel of John, which includes the verse: “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be safe; he will go in and out and find pasture.”

The Holy Father was the first to cross the “door of hope” followed by the cardinals, archbishops, bishops and representatives of the People of God, coming from the five continents, and they went to the Altar of Confession. Then began the Solemn Mass presided by Francis with the participation of 6,000 faithful who were inside the temple to celebrate the Birth of Jesus united in communion.

“Let us bring hope where it has been lost”

During his homily, the Pope entrusted the entire people of God with the mission of being bearers of “hope” for all humanity.

“We, disciples of the Lord, are asked to find in Jesus our greatest hope, and then to carry it without delay, as pilgrims of light in the darkness of the world. The Jubilee invites us to rediscover the joy of the encounter with the Lord, calls us to spiritual renewal and engages us in the transformation of the world, so that this may truly become a Jubilee time”.

He also emphasized the need to be heralds of hope in those places where life is wounded, where expectations are betrayed, where dreams are broken.  “The Jubilee opens so that everyone may be given the hope of the Gospel, the hope of love, the hope of forgiveness,” Francis said, assuring that hope is not only directed to the personal life of each believer, but extends to society as a whole, to interpersonal relationships and to the promotion of the dignity of each person.

Opening of the Holy Doors of the other papal basilicas

In the coming days the Holy Father will also open the Holy Doors of the Basilica of St. John Lateran on December 29; St. Mary Major on January 1, 2025; and St. Paul Outside the Walls on January 5. Also on December 26, the Pontiff will open the Holy Door at the Rebibbia prison in Rome, a moment that invites prisoners “to look to the future with hope and a renewed commitment to life.”

Gaining a plenary indulgence at the Jubilee

The faithful, “pilgrims of hope”, can obtain the Indulgence by undertaking a pilgrimage to any Jubilee holy place, to at least one of the four major Papal Basilicas in Rome, in the Holy Land or in other ecclesiastical circumscriptions, and by participating in the Eucharist, receiving communion, praying for the intentions of the Holy Father and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
