Bastions of the Shalom vocation: St. Francis of Assisi and St. Teresa of Ávila

Saints are bastions of vocation and are examples of how to live and grow in faith for the Shalom Catholic Community.   Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint  Teresa of Ávila are the bastions of the Shalom vocation, providing us with models of prayer and love for God above all things. God’s providence led the founder of the Community, Moysés Azevedo, and the co-founder, Emmir Nogueira, to the writings and the history of these two saints. Poverty, spousal love,  humility, prayer, fraternal life, praise, and penance are some aspects of the life of a Saint that is present in the Shalom spirituality. From St. Teresa of Ávila , the Shalom charisma receives the inspiration of personal, daily and contemplative prayer, ...

St. Francis of Assisi

The Shalom vocation is a vocation with single traits influenced by the Franciscan Spirituality. Along with St. Teresa of Avila, St. Francis of Assisi is a teacher of spiritual life for the members of Shalom Community. He is a safe way that the catholic mystique presents us. We are inspired by him to cry out to the world: “Love is not loved!”. The real peace inside humans’ heart and in the world can only be established if it is based on the inconditional love, “espousal”, to Jesus Christ. After a strong experience of conversion, St. Francis started to live radically the gospel through spousal love. Getting rid of everything that could be an obstacle to live Divine’s will, he showed ...

Pope’s Homily for solemn mass in Assisi

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Friday is celebrating an outdoor solemn mass in the St. Francis Square of the central Italian town of Assisi where he says he is a pilgrim “like countless other pilgrims” who has come to give thanks for the gift of St. Francis to the Church. Today, October 4th,is the Saint’s feast day. As the Pope recalled in his homily in this morning’s liturgy, his namesake and Patron of Italy was the son of a wealthy merchant of Assisi whose “encounter with Jesus led him to strip himself of an easy and carefree life in order to espouse ‘Lady Poverty’ and to live as a true son of our heavenly Father.” Below we publish the Pope’s ...

Pope in Assisi: Christians must strip themselves of worldliness

(Vatican Radio) Christians and the Church must strip themselves of worldliness, said Pope Francis while addressing some of the poor in the Italian hill town of Assisi early Friday. The Pope offered this message in the same hall in which St. Francis, about 800 years ago, undressed himself and laid his fine clothes at his wealthy father’s feet, renouncing his riches and inheritance in favour of a life of poverty consecrated to God. The Pope once again put aside his prepared speech and began his impromptu remarks by debunking a notion that had circulated in the press in recent days: that he would imitate St. Francis by divesting the bishops, the cardinals and himself, as well. However, he said, today ...

The Shalom Catholic Community in Brooklyn Celebrates Its 5th Anniversary

October 22, 2020 marked the founding of the Shalom Catholic Community in Brooklyn, a date providentially aligned with the feast day of Saint John Paul II. For the past five years, the Community has lived its mission of contemplative prayer, fraternal life, and evangelization—serving the Church and all those in search of God, in need of His love, and longing for an encounter with Him. A Mission in the Heart of Brooklyn Nestled between the gentrified neighborhoods of Greenpoint and Williamsburg, the Shalom Community house is surrounded by a youthful and diverse population. While these areas are known for trendy bars, restaurants, and waterfront parks, they are not commonly associated with active faith life—some have even referred to the area ...
