Hundreds of young people from Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Panama stepped away from their countries this weekend on May 18th to 20th to take part in an extraordinary event in the capital of Uruguay. Less than a year to go to the WYD in Panama (January 22-27 2019). Preparations in the Central American country are in full gear especially after Pope Francis officially opened registrations last February. Over 40 thousand signed up in less than a week, divided into 1000 groups. The preparations to welcome over half million youths are in full gear. We discussed the organization of the event with Fr João Chagas, Director of the Youth Office of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life.

On 16th April, in Nazareth, Shalom Catholic Community celebrated with great joy the acceptance of Linda Zaher into the Community Formation Path. She is an arabic from the hometown of Jesus. After two years of experience as a postulant, she was admitted as a disciple which means that she is now a member in formation within the Community. During the Eucharistic celebration, in the Chapel of the Sisters of Nazareth, Linda received as a visible sign a Tau-shaped cross, a symbol of her election and belonging to God and to the Community. It’s not usual to hear good news from the Middle East, frequently it is reported about war, tensions, chemical weapons, and worse. However, this time we can report a real, not fake, and great initiative: the opening of the new Shalom Evangelization Center in the Holy Land at the heart of Haifa, one of the oldest and largest high-tech parks in Israel. Maybe some could argue why this event would be something good for that land, if it cannot stop the conflicts.
